IMAP or POP?

Choose IMAP almost every time. It keeps your mail on the server, so your phone, laptop and webmail all show the same inbox, folders and read status. POP downloads mail to one device and is mainly useful for keeping an offline copy. Read more in webmail vs email apps.

Questions people ask

What are IMAP and SMTP?
IMAP is how your mail app receives email and keeps it in sync with the server. SMTP is how it sends email.
Should I use port 465 or 587?
Use whichever your provider lists. Both are encrypted when set up correctly: 465 uses SSL/TLS from the start, and 587 uses STARTTLS.
Why doesn't my normal password work in my mail app?
Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, AOL and Fastmail need an app password or a "Sign in with" window instead. Microsoft needs modern sign-in. Each provider page explains which.
