Gmail Clipping Checker

Gmail cuts off emails whose HTML is over about 102 KB and hides the rest behind "View entire message". Paste your email's HTML to check its size and get a safely compressed version.

Why Gmail clips emails

Gmail cuts off any email whose HTML is larger than about 102 KB and shows a "[Message clipped] View entire message" link instead. Anything below the cut, often your unsubscribe link, footer and open-tracking pixel, is hidden unless the reader clicks. Images don't count toward the limit because they're loaded from links; the HTML code itself does, including inline styles, comments and spacing.

How the compressor stays safe: it removes ordinary comments and extra spacing only. It keeps Outlook conditional comments (<!--[if mso]>), keeps everything inside <pre>, <textarea>, <script> and <style> blocks as they are, and never changes your text or links. Still, send yourself a test before using it in a campaign.

How to use the Gmail Clipping Checker

  1. Export or copy the HTML of your email from your email platform (often under "Code" or "Export HTML").
  2. Paste it into the box, or open the .html file.
  3. Press Check size to see where it stands against Gmail's 102 KB limit.
  4. If it's close or over, copy the compressed version and send yourself a test.

What usually makes emails too big

Inline styles repeated on every element, which drag-and-drop builders produce in large amounts.

Long legal text, terms and repeated footer blocks.

Code comments and indentation added by design tools.

Embedded images written into the HTML as data (base64) instead of linked, which can add hundreds of kilobytes at once.

Why clipping matters

When Gmail clips an email, everything after the cut is hidden behind "View entire message". That often includes the unsubscribe link, which is required by law in many countries, and the open-tracking pixel, so your open rates are under-counted too.

Frequently asked questions

What size does Gmail clip emails at?

About 102 KB of HTML code. Images don't count because they load from links, but inline styles, comments and spacing in the code do.

What gets hidden when Gmail clips an email?

Everything after the cut-off point, which is often the footer, unsubscribe link and the open-tracking pixel, so opens may also go uncounted.

Is it safe to compress email HTML?

This tool removes only ordinary comments and extra spacing. It keeps Outlook conditional comments and leaves pre, textarea, script and style blocks as they are. Still, send yourself a test before a real campaign.

How else can I reduce email size?

Move long legal text to a web page and link to it, remove unused styles, avoid repeating the same inline styles on every element, and split very long newsletters.

Does Gmail clip on phones too?

Yes. The Gmail apps clip at the same size as Gmail on a computer.

Will my email platform's tracking push it over?

It can. Platforms add tracking code to links and a pixel when sending, so leave a margin of 10 to 15 KB below the limit.
