Free email without a phone number
Many providers ask for a phone number to stop spammers creating accounts in bulk. A few do not ask at all, and some only ask when something looks suspicious.
Proton Mail and Tuta do not require a phone number. Gmail lists the phone number as optional but sometimes insists. Outlook.com lets you use another email address instead in many cases. Yahoo and Zoho require a mobile number.
Provider by provider
| Provider | Phone number? | Free storage |
|---|---|---|
| Proton Mail | Not required: CAPTCHA or a code sent to another email | Up to 1 GB |
| Tuta | Not required; some sign-ups wait for approval | 1 GB |
| Gmail | Optional in Google's steps, but Google may ask | 15 GB shared |
| Outlook.com | Often an email address can be used instead | 15 GB mail |
| GMX | Asks for one for recovery; an alternate email also works | Up to 65 GB |
| Yahoo Mail | Required | 20 GB |
| Zoho Mail | Required (text message code) | Varies by plan |
Providers change their checks often and decide case by case, so treat this as a guide rather than a guarantee.
Why Gmail sometimes demands a number
Google asks for phone verification when sign-up looks risky: many accounts made from the same internet connection or device, a VPN, or unusual activity. Signing up from your own home connection, on a device you normally use, makes it less likely.
Downsides of an account with no phone number
- Harder to recover. If you forget the password, a phone number is often the fastest way back in. Add a recovery email at least.
- Write down your recovery phrase or codes if the provider offers them. Proton, for example, offers a recovery phrase.
- Never buy "verified" accounts or rent numbers to get around checks. These accounts are often shut down and can break the provider's terms.
Questions people ask
- Can I make a Gmail account without a phone number?
- Often yes: Google lists the phone number as optional. If Google asks for one during sign-up, it is checking for spam, and you will need to provide it to continue.
- Which email does not need phone verification?
- Proton Mail and Tuta are the main free providers that do not require a phone number.
- Is an email without a phone number anonymous?
- Not on its own. See how to send an email anonymously for what else can identify you.
